About Me

Welcome to SoCalMommy.com!

Hi, my name is Kelly Powell, and I am a 30-something year-old single Mommy to my amazing, adorable, super-smart and hilarious 7-year-old son named Dylan. I’m originally from upstate NY, a small town just outside of Binghamton (ever hear of it? Nope, I didn’t think so!). Luckily, I have had the pleasure of calling San Diego, CA my home for the past 10 years- wow, time flies! But seriously, I LOVE living here, and I believe that it is an amazing place to raise a family. San Diego is the perfect sized city, not too big, and not too small (sorry Binghamton!). We have a “world famous” zoo, beautiful beaches, tons of fun things to do and places to explore, professional sports teams (Go Chargers!), and in my opinion, some of the best restaurants in the country! All of this, plus the BEST weather in the world- I think I’ll be staying here for quite a while.

A little more about ME and why I started this blog… My passion is to help others. I live to inspire people and to make them smile. It wasn’t until early summer of 2013 that I made some pretty BIG changes in my life. I quit my boring office job and enrolled in an online Nutrition Certificate program through Tufts University. I’ve always been passionate about health and fitness, and decided it was finally time to switch gears and pursue my dream! By the end of that same summer, another big change in my life happened. My husband and I separated after six years of marriage. I could write a whole blog post about that, but I’ll just say that we are both happier apart and we maintain a very respectful relationship with Dylan as our number one priority.

So flash forward one year to today (September 2014)… I have graduated from my Nutrition program at Tufts and I am officially divorced. While it’s been a roller coaster of a year, and I never thought I would be a single mom… here I am- full of courage and determination, and hopeful that the best is yet to come!

I feel like I have finally found my voice and am pursuing my passion. My friends have told me for years, “Kelly, you are so funny!”, “You have amazing recipes!”, “How do you get your arms so toned?”, “Can you help me lose 5 pounds?”, and “How did you potty train your son at age 2?!” They all agreed- “You need to start a blog!!!”

Well here I go! I am so excited to bring you SoCalMommy.com. I hope to inspire you to live a fit and fabulous life, to do something amazing every day, and to be the happiest version of you! There will be fitness tips, healthy & delicious recipes, my favorite beauty & product reviews, affordable-to-exotic travel destinations, and lots of laughs along the way!

Oh yeah, this little scruffy white dog is Zora, aka Zora the Explora. She has her own hashtag #zoratheexplora. My sister and I rescued her from a local dog shelter. We like to say that she choose us, lol. There’s nothing easy about bringing a puppy into your home- the chewing, the peeing, the playful biting. After losing several pairs of flip flops, a pair of glasses, a hat, numerous socks, and my Fitbit… we still love her and she is a part of our family!
